Know what the record covers

As of September 2026, the free DHP License Lookup, run by the state Department of Health Professions, included doctors, physician assistants and nurse practitioners.

It also included pharmacists, pharmacies and out-of-state pharmacies registered to ship into Virginia.

As of September 2026, Virginia doctors also had a public profile that showed any board discipline orders.

Much of the rest of the profile was filled in by the doctors themselves and not checked by the board.

Match the place of care

As of September 2026, Virginia’s Board of Medicine said the rules for an online visit depend on where you are sitting during the visit.

If the visit happens while the patient is in another state, that state’s rules may control the visit.
